4. Hawaiian-Language Protestant Hymnals: A Checklist

This checklist was first published in a scholarly article, “Beyond Bibliography: Interpreting Hawaiian-Language Protestant Hymn Imprints” in the journal Ethnomusicology, 40 (1996), 469-88. The list benefitted from the excellent reference book Hawaiian Language Imprints 1822-1899: A Bibliography by Bernice Judd, Janet E. Bell and Clare G. Murdoch (The Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society and The University Press of Hawaii, 1978). During my years of living on the east coast as a graduate student, I had the privilege of being able to access and index these hymnals, in libraries in Boston, New York, Providence, Washington, DC, and, of course, in Honolulu. The typescript “Hawaiian Hymns: An Index of Protestant Hawaiian-Language Hymnals,” was cateloged in Honolulu libraries. Because the numbering of the editions was used in that index and other projects, that numbering is retained here.

While the listing of the hymnals in Hawaiian Language Imprints was strictly chronological, the order in this checklist groups all editions of a related title together. This makes apparent the process of enlarging editions, and the simultaneous production of more than one collection.

An asterisk denotes an edition whose contents differ from the previous imprint of the same title or series.

This is such a wonderful resource for our Hawaiian churches. There is much history here. I hope that one day, all these books will be available to view online, as many of them are now out of print.
