Good grief–July 2012 will be history in a matter of hours. As virtually promised, posts here have become sporadic, as I take advantage of the summer months to make progress on the book manuscript Hawaiian Songs Ancient and Modern.
I am most honored by the contribution of the esteemed Hawaiian music historian, John Marsden, who has singlehandedly exploded the length of the discography for the song “Beyond the Reef.” His record collection is deep in recordings by European and Japanese artists–two areas where my wallet does not reach. My list was running 20 pages (single-spaced, mind you), and John has sent over 10 pages of additions. This is a very sobering exercise. I knew that my own efforts were only partial–but even this exercise surprised me.
