This blog is the perfect place to share the listening assignment playlists that students in my Hawaiian music course at UH-Mānoa. This particular playlist also complements a post “Oli–Five Genres” from November 23, 2009.

Oli in kepakepa style

1. “A Kaua‘i i ka ‘olewa i luna.” mele oli in kepakepa style, chanted by Kaipo Frias of Hālau o Kekuhi, Hilo. The recording posted for my students  is extracted from the television broadcast of the Kamehameha Hula Competition in 1986. However, Kaipo reprises this mele at the opening of the 1987 documentary film Hawaiian Rainbow. It is a stunning sequence at the edge of Halema‘uma‘u Crater.
